ReadImage() works on an already-open window, but open() let's you read an
image as part of
window initialization.

The way I most often check this is by opening a hidden window via
tmp := open(..., "g", "canvas=hidden", "image="||filename)
and then read its WAttrib() width and height.

There might be a utility library procedure that returns these dimensions.

One reason that .jpg and .png file format support is underdocumented is that
I don't believe they are finished -- they seem to work on some platforms
with some images, and produce incorrect renderings on some platforms with
some images. I look forward to the day when they are fully debugged.
