This talk of a JVM back end for Unicon has me thinking of an LLVM back end. This could greatly improve the C interface, for one thing. I have been using Pure (pure-lang.googlecode.com), which is based on LLVM, and it is unusually easy to mix with C and Fortran. The main downside is having to wait for the just-in-time compilation.
