You are right, that doesn't seem safe to me, get a voltmeter acrossed the solenoid tabs, and check what voltage the coil is labeled at too. Maybe check open voltage too. You are using 12 Volts, correct? Are you talking about your 1984 36DC? I installed one for a buddy 'bout 12 years ago, and don't remember any problems. Let us know what you find. Den 48YF EAGLE
