John:

It has been a while but if I recall correctly, the original
configuration of my '73 36 aft cabin was 440s with FWC. It has been
over 20 years since I replaced the engines, so my memory is s little
fuzzy. The heat exchanger ran along the port side of each engine,
under the exhaust manifold. The antifreeze entered the manifolds from
the back end at the bottom of the manifold and circulated out by a
fitting at the top of the back end that was connected to an internal
tube. Hose ran from the heat exchanger to a T and then to each
manifold and then back to the thermostat housing. Salt water entered
the risers from the heat exchanger and then out the exhaust. A gasket
between the riser and the manifold prevented the salt water from
entering the manifold

The units were made by San Juan Engineering which is now out of
business. Uniparts may have access to further information. With salt
water use, you will need new exhaust manifolds since the existing ones
will have passageways that are salt encrusted.

I noticed that Sen Dure in Florida makes a heat exchanger for the 440s
and I'll bet that if you call them, they can give you specific
information on the set up.
