I once went down to my boat and saw diving activity going on at an adjoining dock. Turns out we had a young newlywed couple living aboard and the wife had lost her expensive wedding ring over the side. The couple told me that hiring the divers was at no further risk to them because they only required payment if they found the ring- which they quickly did in 6 inched of muddy bottom using a type of underwater metal detector.
Don't know if this type of arrangement is standard and if there is equipment around to easily detect metal under water but might be worth a shot. Others on the site may have more info.
