Aha! This is an area of real empirical experience for me which
included banging, bashing, bleeding, cursing and thoughts of selling
the freakin' boat. The packing on my port rudder post is nearly
impossible to reach.

Here's my solution: First take a Saws-All and make the stupid access
hole larger. What the hell were they thinking!? Then get a light of
some sort which can be placed in the hole and will stand on its own.
Now, here's the trick. I use a medium sized curved vise grip which
would typically be used for pipe and a short handled small steel
mallet. I lock the vise grip on the locknut and tap, tap, tap. Then
I do the same with the tightening nut, tap, tap, tap. Because of the
limited space I fell lucky if I can get 30 degrees or so out of each
series of taps.

All this really works. However, it is best to keep in mind while
undertaking this project such things as the vastness of the universe,
or Rome wasn't built in a day or the longest journey starts with a
single step.
