Bob, I don't remember what year your 42' is and mine is an '84 so a lot of layout details are different than those built in the 70's. Anyway, the pump that was on my boat was the belt driven type that thumped away and it had an accumulator with about a half gallon volume. The pump was leaking and needed a lot of work so I replaced it with a Shurflo, Smart Sensor, 5.7 Fresh Water Pump, Model number 5901-0211. It is supposed to be quite, but I don't think so. So, I installed it where the old pump was; amid-ship on the port side under where one stands when using the down station. It didn't work well -- it ran most of the time and there seemed to be air in the water line. Also, a friend that was working on my water heater replacement said that the pump was very hot. I sent a question to Shurflo asking if it only draws 15 milliamps when it isn't running, why is it hot? They said that is sounded like it was running all the time. I don't know about that, but I did discover that, unlike to original pump, this one had to be located no more than 6 feet from the water tank. I my case, that would be back near the transom. Long story short -- Shurflo is sending me a replacement that I am relocating (it was still under the 3 year warranty). So I don't know the end of the story yet. Oh, BTW, this new pump required more amps than the old one and I had pulled new wire forward. Now I am pulling new wire aft.

My 42' has jabsco pump with a small (like 1 cup?) accumulator tank and I cannot get it to work without pulsing. When you shower it goes hot-cold-hot-cold as it pulses. Also it is mouted under the aft bunk so noise is an issue. I want a new system mounted somewhere else. There are new pumps on the market which are variable speed and I was thinking about buying and installing one. What systems do you all have that work well?
