Matt, I see a lot of people here steering you clear of using a handheld as a primary radio. I know you never said you intended on doing that but I would second it. My last boat had Standard Horizon radios and my new boat I put in Icom gear. Personally I think you would but be just fine with a comparable model to the Icom M-304. I have a bigger 504 at my lower helm that is 25 watts but I don't use 3/4 of the features it has. The M-304 does has DSC as do many newer radios. Personally I would just steer clear of the Uniden and Cobra models that are "marine". I had a buddy that was using those and has replaced all of them already.
