A lot of times it is easier in the long run to remove the Pump from the engine to work on it. In any event, take two straight slot screw drivers and insert them a 1/3 of the way down on each side of the old impeller. Then pry the impeller out. If whoever installed the old impeller did not put some waterproof grease on the pump shaft, it will make it a lot harder to remove.
You need to follow the discharge water hose from the pump to the heat exchanger. Remove the brass cover(one bolt in the center) and remove the rubber vains inside the exchanger. COUNT the vanes you find to make sure you have all of them.
To install the new impeller, Lubercate the impeller outside vanes and inside of the pump and pump shaft with grease, take a hose clamp and put it around the new impeller to squash it a little and start to push it on the shaft. Make sure the splines are lined up. Keep driving the impeller in and the clamp will slide along the impeller. If it does not loosen it up a little and move it up a little and tighten it again.
The new impeller will not just fall in and will be tight to push it in the pump.
Look at the cover, if it shows any signs of ware replace it or at least turn the cover over, if the outside cover plate is clean and smooth, if not you will have to replace the cover to get the most volume out of the pump.
Thats all folks,
I have 1978 671s in my 1979 42...need to replace the raw water impellers..one has been damaged via the screen pick up deteriorated to the point it aloud stuff to get through, caught it in time so no engine problems.
I have removed the face plate and now I’m wondering how to get the impeller out??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Monty
