I was reading the operator's manual for my Onan, 8.0 MDKD, genset. In the maintenance section I found the statement, "Replace the bearings every five years. Deterioration of the bearing grease due to oxidation makes this replacement necessary." Since the previous owner did little maintenance, I assume this bearing replacement is way overdue. However, the manual does not include instructions as to how this is accomplished. The rear bearing seems to be mounted in rubber, in a cross structure. I wonder if the cross can be removed and then the entire armature in order to access the bearings. I haven't located an Onan mechanic in my area as yet. We had a mechanic at the marina (since left the state) who told me that bad bearing where the number one problem with gensets. At the time I thought the manual was just addressing the rear bearing. Does anyone have knowledge of this bearing replacement.
