never posted in the uniflite forum, but i do read it from time to
time. just for reference, i have 71 salty dog with a single 440m
swings a 17x23 rh prop, cant give you any performance specs, cause i
have never had it in the water, dont know what kind of transmission,
but prop & tranny are believed to be stock. i do know where there is
another salty, but dont know whether its a pup or dog, havent gotten
close enough cause its in a locked storage yard. believe its a s-pup
because it has an ancient stern drive and have never heard of a s-dog
with a stern drive. dont know if its for sale, but looks to be in
disrepair (maybe even arrears on storage?). doesnt look as though it
has been used in the last 10 years. i inadvertantly broke the
starboard window on my s-dog when if first got it, trying to remove it
so as to replace the brittle, shrinking, crumbling gasket. the stock
glass shattered in long sharp shards. i wanted to replace with
automotive type laminated safety glass or at least regular safety
glass, none of the several glass shops i contacted could cut the
safety glass in house and has to be ordered some time in advance at
prices ranging from $300- 450 (actually a pretty large window). the
gasket is actually 2 parts (the main gasket and an external lock
strip). the place in bham that sells uniflite stuff, had it for in
excess of $12 a foot for both pieces, figured i would need 12+' to be
safe including corner radius (would be really stupid to try and save
and end up an inch short). tried to find same profile for less, but
was unable to locate. the glass has to be cut smaller than the opening
to allow for gasket,if the glass was cut 1/8"too small, it would
sag&leak. decide the only way to guaranty fit would be to remove port
window (not happening) altogether it was looking to cost an unexpected
$500+ to replace the window as a stock configuration. priced marine
windows online and got a quote from motion marine to replace the
window with an aluminum frame clamp ring window with safety glass for
about $300, much easier to install, less room for error, imo,a much
better system, for considerably less than the stock system. all they
need is an exact tracing of the opening.(comes with the glass mounted
in an external aluminum frame and a pre drilled inner aluminum ring.
caulk the external portion of the opening, remove excess caulk and
dont fully tighten until caulk has fully hardened in order to prevent
squeezing all of the caulk out. guaranteed not to leak, and much
easier to deal with. the only issue is that it wouldnt cosmetically
match the port side. feel i should eventually replace port window as
well. so i can replace both windows for not much more than a single
stock window. imo, a much better system less prone to leaks, no
shrinkage involved and stiffens the window opening area ( a good thing
because the wheelhouse are fg is only about 3/16 and not ultra stiff
with the window out). dont know the address of this other salty but
will try to come up with it. i do have the # of the yard where it is
kept, if you want to check it out (its in burien/white center area).
if you have any questions, or want that #, just shoot me an email and
i will hook you up. if you feel you might benefit from looking at my
sd, then you are welcome to do that as well. hope that helps, just my
2c worth.
