The key should be a tight interference fit - tap in with a hammer. When you pull the prop, look at the sides of the key for any signs of wear. If the prop has been rotating on the taper, it will wear a long line in the side of the key. Key stock is pretty cheap. I'd say why not replace it while the boat is out?
