Marine water heaters use a lot smaller boiler tank and some utilize engine coolant to heat under way. So they aren't too far from the thankless. I installed a tankless heater in a house and it works great! Plenty of hot water on demand for laundry etc. I don't think anybody on a boat uses as much as a household does, I would do it. Heaters with a tank make a big mess when they go and most all fail due to sediment build up. My logic is remove the tank, you remove what fails right? So they last longer without the rusty mess and weight.
