Would it, perhaps, be a good idea to suggest to the kernel group
an extension to the permission() call: Flag: IGNOREROFS
which would cause permission to return what the permissions
would be if the file system were not read-only?
(and turn your #if 0 into a live if() ).
Granted you'd still have to put ifdefs around the code,
to keep it backwards compatible. but I think it may
be the better long-term solution.
