I don't know why Jeff suggested unionfs 1.2 to you, but nfs exporting in
1.2 is broken. I suggest you tring unionfs 1.3 or latest cvs snapshot.

At this point, how does 'etc' look like on nfs server?
If 'ls -d etc' on nfs server has no problem, then try 'ls -d etc' on nfs
client again.
And what is your branch filesystem? XFS or something?
