Wilhelm, Do you mean you have two diskless machines, and both of them mount the same unionfs as root filesystem? If so, will you try mounting your unionfs on nfs server from two nfs clients without nfsroot? In this case, I am afraid that lockd may be a problem.
And will you try unionfs debug option, in order to find which function returns "Operation not supported"? And if you can, invoke interactive shell in your linuxrc just before it exist or it kicks init process, and try ls to test lokkup operations.
