If not very frequently, could you just try to create all of the files you
need before you mount the union?
Indeed, not very frequently. Devices will only get created once at boot,
but I was thinking that I might need full symbolic link support once the
system's up. Now that I think about it, I can probably limit myself to
bootup. :)
