I am using unionfs (1.3, gentoo, 2.6.17-gentoo kernel) as in my backup server.
The server has two disks, and the union is over them.
A script changes the top union so that the disk with the most free space will
always be written to.

The problem is with opaque directories. The order of the unions has to change
fairly often, and just because a new directory is created doesn't mean that I
want it opaque.

Is there a good way to turn off opaque directories (stop the creation
of '._wh_.opaque' files)?
I would prefer not to patch the source myself (but it would probably be fairly
simple).
