By way of example, with Rhythmbox running but minimised while on Workspace 1, selecting "Ryhtmbox" from the volume control will cause the Rhythmbox window to open on Workspace 2. In addition, when running Compiz and Compiz Cube with 4 workspaces, selecting whilst viewing Workspace 4 will cause the application window to open on Workspace 1 (one logical workspace right).
