same here. i work on my desktop pc and i have no power indicator for my wireless mouse and keyboard. in the settings menu power i see the power status of my combo. how can i force to show the icon in the unity panel?

In this case, when my mouse and keyboard batteries are discharging the indicator should show, but without listing the not-charging devices (such as my notebook battery). For the same reason, when using a desktop computer or a notebook without battery, the indicator won't ever show the state of the other battery powered devices available.
