Hello everyone,
I'm currently investigating a few issues with status notifiers in
Plasma's system tray. We're attempting a redesign and I want to find out
how they behave in Unity. The spec mentiones that appinicators/status
notifiers can be hidden when they assume the "passive" state.
In Plasma these notifiers are hidden in a popup accessible via the
system tray. Though, most of them don't really serve any real purpose
there and just sit around. So we thought about removing them from the
system tray, though some developers pointed out to us that a user might
still want to interact with a notifier's context menu. I wondered how
Unity handles these cases. Does Unity show or hide "passive"
appindicators and if it hides them, is there a way for the user to
interact with these?
If Unity does not allow to interact with "passive" indicators, then the
software that needs the the indicator to be still accessible in its
"passive" state would be clearly broken in Unity. We could use this as
an argument for a change of policy in Plasma's system tray.
Cheers,
Phil
