The first part of Margie's message (that you didn't quote) was, "I don't think the 
events of Tuesday are an excuse for patriotism. I see patriotism as a justification 
for Americans' feeling of superiority and detachment from the rest of the people in 
the world.

I see Margie as saying, <it's okay to be critical of the U.S., but being patriotic is 
jingoism>.
