**** Major Taylor's birthday ride ****
November 24th, meet at NBW at 9:00AM, leave at 10:00AM

Dear volunteers, donors and friends,

It is time for the NBW Thanksgiving ride and chestnut roast. This year we are putting
the "Don't be a Turkey, Wear a Helmet" aside (though helmets are still required). We
will be taking a short ride through West Philadelphia to an area behind the Mann Music
Center where we will roast chestnuts, hot dogs, s'mores and other delicacies. There
will be hot chocolate.

We would love any and all to attend. If you are coming please let us know - phone or
e-mail us back. All youth are welcome but they must either
1 Have completed the NBW bike safety lesson
2 Be accompainied by an adult who is responsible for them on the ride.

If you need a bike or helmet for the ride please let us know by Tuesday.

Please dress for the weather. If could be cold. It was last year but we had a good
time, but only because people brought golves scarves and hats. Dress in layers - you
may get hot when riding and want to take off a layer.

Please call or e-mail if you have any questions or comments. Meanwhile, a happy
thanksgiving to you all.

Best regards,

Andy Dyson

Who was Major Taylor?

Marshall Walter 'Major' Taylor was the first African American bicycling champion. He
was born on November 26, 1878. As a kid, he worked in a bike shop and would performed
bike tricks. He earned his nickname 'Major' because he would wear a military uniform
while doing these tricks.

He entered his first race when he was 13, and won. Over time, he won 139 races and set
record breaking world speed records.

There are books about Major Taylor. You can find out more about him in his
autobiography "The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World" and the biography "Major
Taylor, the Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Racer".
