Headline Item: Change in hours of operation
The twice-monthly recycling at 50th and Baltimore (sponsored by Cedar Park
Neighbors) will be changing its hours slightly starting THIS SATURDAY Feb 2.
The hours henceforth will be:
9:00 am - 12:30 pm
Essentially everything else is the same.
For those who would like a refresher (and for new folk who don't know of
this program), here are the details about this long-standing recycling
program serving West Philadelphia:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------
WHAT TO RECYCLE:
PLASTIC:
#1 and #2 plastic containers (look for the numbers 1 or 2 in the recycling
triangle symbol on the bottom of the plastic container.). This includes most
common containers - plastic milk bottles, soda bottles, water bottles,
laundry products, etc.
Please DON'T include #'s 3,5,6.
Please remove caps and discard separately. Rinse out the containers. There's
no requirement to crush them, although it helps.
MIXED PAPER:
These means almost any "post-consumer" paper items, including cardboard and
corrugated cardboard. It includes phone books, magazines, cardboard
packaging (unstained by food), junk mail (but please remove the plastic
"window" of the envelope), office paper, old books, including hardcovers,
newspaper, and any similar items. There's no need to separate different
kinds of paper. In short, the category is ...mixed paper! [Note: for some
reason, cardboard pizza boxes, even when clearly stained, have always been
accepted, so just consider them a happy exception to the rule.]
WHERE AND WHEN TO RECYCLE:
Bring the materials to the area just to the left of the Firehouse Farmers'
Market, 50th and Baltimore, on:
The FIRST and THIRD Saturday of each month, no later than 12:25 PM. The
trucks that haul this stuff off have two stops to make after they leave our
location, and they leave PROMPTLY at 12:30.
Plastic goes at one end of the site (farthest from the Market), mixed paper
at the other end (near the Market).
While you're there, buy something at the Market! They support the recycling
program in a very material way, so let's return the favor!
WHY RECYCLE
Because it's the right thing to do
Because it helps the environment (meaning it helps you).
Because Mother Gaia says so.
Because it produces an income for Cedar Park Neighbors, which translates
into lots of local good works.
A FEW necessary DON'T's
Please DON'T bring items that aren't marked with 1 or 2 in the recycling
symbol. Plasticware (knives, forks), bubblewrap, six-pack holders,
styrofoam - these are not the right stuff.
DON'T bring bags full of plastic bags. Technically these are "film", not
"containers", and the recycler isn't prepared to deal with them.
DON'T bring waxy milk- and orange-juice containers - they are composites,
not really paper.
DON'T bring glass or metal - only plastic or mixed paper.

Those are the main details. Read on (if you have the strength) for further
interesting details:
(1) The program has been averaging about 4.5 tons of mixed paper and about a
ton of plastic a month. This has been very steady for the 18 months, but it
would be WONDERFUL if we could increase those amounts. Tell your neighbors!
(2) We can always use volunteers. Please call me at the phone number above
if you can donate time.
(3) Time was when the trucks that carry off the recyclables would stay on
location all morning. For the past year or so, this has not been possible:
these same trucks typically make 3-4 separate stops on a given Saturday
(this is to make as efficient a possible use of the trucks and manpower and
thus keep the program economically self-supporting). Hence, we can no longer
rely on the truck being right there whenever you chance to arrive. Please be
patient about this. There is almost always someone on hand to help you find
a place to put your recyclables, even if the trucks aren't right there.
(4) There are a number of similar sites around the City (8 or 10). Cedar
Park's site is in the middle of the pack, tonnage wise.
(5) In the 7-8 years this program has been at that location, we have been
closed on only 2 scheduled dates that anyone can recall (one was a Fourth of
July first Saturday, and the other was Millenium Saturday, Jan 1 2000).
Snow, rain, hail, wind - the trucks have always been there sooner or later,
and the recyclables were picked up and delivered. It's a reliable program.
