You're invited to a Cherry Tree special event on Sunday, February 3. Join The Cherry Tree and the Friends of Clark Park as we celebrate Charles Dickens' birthday. Philadelphia is unique in its statue honoring author, satirist and biting social commentor Charles Dickens--perhaps because he asked that no statues or memorials be made of him. Nevertheless, Clark Park proudly boasts "Little Nell", a statue of the author reading to his beloved character. And, in our annual tribute to Dickens, we will celebrate his birthday in a party for all ages.
There will be dramatic readings from his works -- some humorous, some dramatic, and all encompassing the wonderful characters and situations only Dickens could have created. And there will be music! David Jones, a capella performer par excellence, will lead us in songs from Dicken's life and times. Long-time lovers of the Cherry Tree know David Jones' work from the ensemble Poor Old Horse. He's traveled the world singing traditional British songs:sea chanties, bawdy music hall songs, laments, drinking songs and social criticism. The party will begin at 2 pm, and be held in Griffith Hall at the University of the Sciences, Philadelphia, at 43rd and Kingsessing. Admission is free. Refreshments will be available, including birthday cake. Following the presentation, the group will adjourn to the statue in the park, near the corner of 43rd and Chester, to sing a traditional birthday chorus to Our Mutual Friend, Charles. The party is a collaboration between the Friends of Clark Park and the Cherry Tree Music Coop. THIS IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT-ONLY LIST. IF YOU REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE, THE REPLY WILL NOT BE DELIVERED.
