Thank You!
and
An Update.
Last Thursday our JV-Boys "B" team played the JV- "A" team to a 31-31 TIE
!!!
The "A" team won, in overtime, and my kids discovered that
Adults are thrilled with proof of improvement and
Games (not just wins) are good fun.
The "A" team gave us two games and won both.
I hope their Coach had some pleasure in seeing the sport he has nurtured
for several years, become so popular that new volunteers were needed to
expand the program to include another 15 kids.
Starting this week, the "B" Athletes will give something back. Fridays,
after-school through Lent, will be dedicated to intramural improvement in
Math and Basketball. The "A" and "B" teams can join forces for
intramural play and inclusion of other kids and there will be one-on-one
pairing of Scholars with Athletes towards improvement in school and on
the court.
Many thanks to neighbors (including "List" friends) are due:
Mary, you were first to sponsor a child!
Your donation arrived when the need was greatest!
Ed, you gave a ball to your Alma Mater and the kids.
Chris, you gave a Ball and a great story about how,
inclusion in sports produced experiences and
opportunities well beyond the playing fields.
Cranes, you gave a ball and sponsored a kid.
Mussie and Rovell, West Catholic can be proud of your volunteerism.
Charles, Daniel, Evans and Girma -
take a few Community Service Bows.
Busy in Elementary and High School,
you boys found time to mentor younger kids.
Emily and Billy, I hope your families and College know how
wise and generous you are.
Your coaching will be treasured for a long time.
"Coach" Russell - you backed your son (and the team) with
your minutes between jobs, and while you couldn't
stay an entire practice, you imparted more than just
basketball skills with your juggling and your choices.
The SFDS "Family" of Coaches and Athletes donated time and facilities.
Families prepared kids for games and practice, and came out as
Cheerleaders.
To Coach PHELAN of the PHILADELPHIA SCHOOL and
SETH COHEN of SPRUCE HILL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
Thanks for promised games against good teams and schools.
Several List Friends offered suggestions and contacts.
Others have outstanding pledges.
I'll collect all with gratitude.
My "vision" for this Season would be complete if coaches or teams from
PENN, DREXEL & / or USP
would volunteer an afternoon and their teams and facilities to donate a
"one-on-one" clinic to our kids.
So, anyone with connections in the Atlhletic Departments of the
neighborhood colleges, please encourage the coaches to make an afternoon
available to our kids.
Another item on my wish list is a "Team Banquet". Benny LAI, neighbor
and owner of the amazingly delicious VIETNAM RESTAURANT located on 11th
Street, has volunteered discounts if we can just find a slow day at the
convention center. My husband and I can probably pick up the food tab.
But we'd like some "Prizes" for our MVP and MIP and our MVT(Tutor) and
MIS(Scholar).
On Thursday we will play our first "Away" game with the kids of the
PHILADELPHIA SCHOOL.
Mr. TOUHEY, 8th grade Teacher, has volunteered to Van-pool many of the
players.
It has been a lot of fun.
My family has put much time and money into expanding sports. We made
sure our son and many other 5th and 6th grade boys, who had the desire,
got some training. Many of our volunteers were teens and young Adults
with no kids of their own. They have the drive to help younger kids. I
hope all those who gave gifts of time, basketballs and or money feel a
measure of the pride and pleasure that we feel. The "B" team kids
improved enormously, had a great time, and recognize that their program
was a "second chance" supported by free will donations and volunteerism.
We are grateful to all who helped and I hope I can count on support for
next year and beyond. We also recommend involvement ins other kid
activities. Help out Clark Park Youth Soccer. It provides a Coed venue
for kids as young as 5 years old. Help out at local churches and at the
public and private schools. So it for yourself and enjoy the bonus of
knowing neighborhood kids can benefit.
All the best!
