Re: Mary Alice Duffy - 10 AM Funeral Mass - St. Francis De Sales

One of our more interesting neighbors has died of lung cancer.
I didn't get a lot of notice, but am able to run next door for the
Funeral Mass, at St. Francis De Sales at 10 AM.

Mary Alice was in many ways a product of Catholic Education as embodied,
in this neighborhood by such wildly different types as:
        Ramona Africa
        Sister Constance
Myself and my seven "Campion" Sisters
        and many other.

Mary Alice and her sister Sara opened one of the first all women Law
Firms in the country.
She was often isolated by her views.
She was radically feminist yet assertively pro-life.
She was charged more than once for her protests.
But, she had courage and will and was a force for change.
She was a State Representative and a criminal trial lawyer.

Mary Alice Duffy became my friend in the course of officiating at some
hotly contested Cedar Park Neighbors Elections.
Her last years were lived in the painful vale of cigarette addiction.
I would bring her boxes of miniature frozen Quiches, as they were one of
her favorite treats.
Losing folks, like Mary Alice and my Dad, to emphysema gives me an
incentive to pray for relief from addictions.

I would ask anyone who sees this message to pause and reflect on life and
death and making a difference.
And to consider sending a message of support to friends who might be
trying to stop smoking, or to woman who are trying to make careers for
themselves in the law. Please send some positive message forward in
honor of Mary Alice.

Her obituary and photo were in the Friday 3/23/2002 Inquirer.

Thanks and all the best!
Liz
