Dear neighbors:
As you know, schools with poor test scores are up for being "
managed" by outside groups, outside of the School Board that is... Lea is
one. Despite the fact that we now have, for the first time in years, a
skilled, experienced and dedicated principal, who really likes children
as well as being an inspiring leader ( I have joined his Sat. morning
tutoring group.. and seen him in other situations).... Lea may be managed
by Edison next year.. Penn will continue to be a Partner, but will not
manage the school interms of budget, priorities, etc.
Tomorrow Wed. night May 29 a member or members of the School
Reform Commission come to Lea to the auditorium to hear what the
principal has to say, to ask questions and presumably, to answer our
questions. If you believe, as I do, that schools are, with libraries and
recreation places, and of course, families, important places where the
destinies of the next generation are fairly determined.... then try to
come and see what you can do to give the children of Lea a fair shake in
the next few years... a fairer shake I should say, since the $$ spent on
each of them is about half that spent on their more wealthy peers a mile
and a half away.... as well as less than in some nearby schools...
The idea that one should make a profit, or even think of making a
profit, from the education of underprivileged children seems to me a
dreadful idea...... perhaps the word abomination comes to mind.
I could say more, having read about the head of Edison in the
NYTimes article, but will stop hear, having probably lost you along the way.
Try to come and ask tough questions!
