Another possibility is one I emailed Tony about earlier. It could be the 
very same species of wood, but it could be quartersawn, or it could be 
heartwood, which tends to be darker in many species than wood cut 
farther from the center of the tree. (Heartwood pine, for example, is 
more weather-resistant and darker than regular pine.)

Or, the original builders may very well have use different species of 
woods for the original window frames. After all, woods vary in stability 
from species to species. One may be happy with a relatively soft or 
flexible wood for window trim, but for the actual frame-- where pieces 
slide in precisely-made grooves, and which hold large panes of expensive 
glass-- one might have used a more stable wood.
