The modern laundry site, soon to be Eckert's Drugs, is owned by David Adelman of Campus Apartments.
According to the Annual Report of Pennsylvania Land Recycling Program Report 2000 from the Department of Environmental Protection, the site is highly toxic. This not surprising since dry cleaning operations use perc and other toxic chemicals. McDonald's corportion decided to buy the lot down the street at 43rd and Market instead of the modern laundry site because the 43rd St site is slightly less toxic. Neighbors Against McPenntrification flyered that neighborhood so that residents would be aware of hazards. Of course, the flyers on poles were immediately ripped down, courtesy of the UCD. I don't know of any other educational efforts. Whenever I mention it to a nearby resident, they say that they haven't heard about this issue. The Storage Tank and Spill Prevention Act of August, 1989, requires responsible parties to fund and clean up site contamination using certified contractors. The responsible parties include current owners even if they were not the ones causing contamination. -Ann ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month!
