Title: Sheldon Hackney book event at Penn Bookstore tomorrow

Sheldon Hackney will be at the Penn Bookstore discussing and singing his new book.
This will be a great event. Much of the book is about Penn and Hackney's time as President of Penn preceding his chairmanship of the NEH. It's fascinating reading.

Sheldon Hackney discussing and signing The Politics of Presidential Appointment: A Memoir of the Culture War at the Penn Bookstore, December 3 at 7:00.p.m.

This event is co-sponsored by the Penn Library.

The Politics of Presidental Appointment: A Memoir of the Culture War by Sheldon Hackney with a forward be Vernon Jordan, offers a case-study of how conservative ideology temporarily road-blocked President Clinton's nomination for the chairmanship of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Then president of the University of Pennsylvania and political centrist, Hackney was eminently qualified for the NEH position. But the right-winged media took a campus event and cast it as a scene in a mythical narrative with which they hoped to capture the attention of the nation and bring down Clinton. In the end, Hackney was confirmed---with the help of political moderates---and went on to serve with distinction. With an engaging ironic viewpoint, Professor Hackney methodically dissects the confirmation process, offering important political and cultural commentary along the way. In his scholarly manner, Hackney sheds light on the background and ramifications of the Culture War between left and right which climaxed in the 1990s.

Sheldon Hackney is Professor of U.S. History at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Hackney is the former president of the University of Pennsylvania (1981-1993) and the former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities(1993-1997).

All events at the Penn Bookstore are free and open to the public.
