This is a summary of the responses I've received about new water
service. Thank you to everyone who's responded. It was helpful, and,
more important, comforting to hear of other experiences.

Since I'd indicated I would summarize if there was interest, I hope no
one is offended that I'm including names and direct quotes. I can't
think of another way to summarize the very widely varying responses I
got. At least this way the list only gets one extra email on the
subject.

For what it's worth, I'm looking at paying $3850 for my service.

Reading the below, I realize that it's quite difficult to compare
prices: what do they have to dig through, how far is it from your
house to the curb, does it continue under the street, how deep is the
service?

I've also learned that you can get it done next day if you have an
emergency (no water), but just losing a few hundred gallons a minute
under the sidewalk is not an emergency. Then it can take a week to get
all the permits. That, or contractors were lying to me because they
wanted to spend Christmas with their families. Probably the former.

I hope none of you ever need this information. It's not a very nice
Christmas present, but when you are faced with no running water, it's
what you do.

I had to have my sewer line repaired last spring and I took advantage of a
no interest program offered by the Water Bureau. In this program all work
is arranged by the city (with city certified contractors) and one has 5
years to pay it off. The total cost was around $2700 and included the
repair of the street and sidewalk . . . I ended up having to pay it off in
full when I refinanced but it was good to have access to the loan when the
work needed to be done.

A long time ago I had to replace the main sewer pipe, which also
required digging up the sidewalk, and it ran about $1200. Once they
opened the sidewalk I had them replace the main water service too, since
it just added a very small amount to the cost. Perhaps you should look
into the condition of your sewer pipe and see if it will need to be
replaced soon -- you may end up saving a bundle by spending a little
more up front.

Jeff I lucked out and convinced the water dept the junction was
leaking and after a school bus crashed into a car due to the black ice
caused by water being spread by trolley wheels, the Water dept dug it
up and fixed it. Now just the joint in the street needed to be
replaced. they charged me only $450.

I had more than that done a few years ago, right after I bought my
house, so I don't know if my experience applies. The waste pipe
collapsed about 25 feet into the basement and had to be replaced through
there, under the front yard, sidewalk and all the way to the street.
That painful experience cost me about $5,000, but then again it was an
emergency and a lot more than just sidewalk-to-street, so I'm sure just
replacing water service on a regular basis would be a lot less
expensive. Good luck.

$1800.00, in about 1995. We used Alesi, they're very good, and were able to
come the next day, take care of the permits/violations with the city, come in
one day and be done in one day. Geofredo had recommended them (it's a
specialized business, different than normal plumbers.)

I think it depends on the depth of the water service line. Anywhere from
$4000 to $14,000.

I got ours repaired by the "City" - they have a program for
single-family owners, don't know if you qualify, where they will
contract with someone from their list, pay them, and then you pay the
City. (interest free loan, with mechanics lien, I believe.)

Rate card is fixed. I forget the details certain fee for interconnect,
shutoff valve, etc. The big variable is the distance... that tends to
be where the bill gets padded.

We wound up using (I can look up the details if you need) somebody name
of Mr. Plumber or some such cute name. They were quite efficient, did
the job in basically 2 days... they hit some "big fieldstones" in our
foundation which caused them to have to do the curb to the house bit
twice, consequently the inside cleanup was done the next day (re-cement
the wall). They dug two pits, one in at the main in the center of the
street, and another at the valve curbside. They have a pneumatic driver
that makes quick work of the "tunnel" for the copper (3/4 inch from the
main to the house.)

Total cost was something around $4500. Which included from the center
of Chestnut Street to our foundation.

Hi Jeff - I am a builder/GC, so I presume this is a cut rate
$2400 included digging and replacement of copper line
this did include the tarmac replacement at the street but did not include
any concrete sidewalk replacement
Take care
Will
