Eric Clemons (Wharton prof) had an op-ed piece in yesterday's Wall Street Journal commenting on FAO Schwartz' recent filing for bankruptcy, with a message of promise/caution for The Green Line and other existing/aspiring local businesses (e.g., the outstanding Last Word bookstore) many of us would like to see (run?) in the neighborhood. Eric wrote, in part:
"They're (Schwartz) very, very good toy stores. But being a very, very good toy store, like being a very, very good specialty bookstore, no longer assures success. To compete with Starbucks you need more than good coffee, you need fantastic coffee, neighborhood loyalty, and ambience. You need to be different."
