By the way, Mr Tyler has also made the statement (at a conference about five years ago during which he made a presentation to his peers in the historic preservation community) that you can take historic preservation too far because "not all buildings are worth preserving." And he was talking about the kind of housing built around the turn of the 20th century to house the rapid influx of immigrants and the people who could communte rather than walk to their jobs because of the new mass transit networks (sound familiar?). How different a tune he is singing when he has the power of the city ordinances with which to play. But, we all know what power tends to do, and what absolute power like that invested in the PHC does. There's something I have to say here. About two or three months ago, I attended a meeting of the PHC where they had originally planned to discuss Councilwoman Blackwell's bill regarding designation. They decided not to discuss it at the meeting, but apart from a long midday break I stuck it out. I had a chance to speak to Mr. Tyler a little; I'd just wanted to introduce myself, to keep things frienly despite my criticisms of the PHC's procedures.
Mr. Tyler told me something that, as far as I know, he has not said publicly. If I get this wrong, I hope that he or someone else will correct me. He told me that, because of concerns about a conflict of interest, i.e., his living in a proposed HD, that he was taking himself out of the process of designating Spruce Hill. I got the impression that this is a matter of his personal integrity, and I think he was extremely distressed with the suggestion about a conflict of interest.
Now, readers on this list know that I'm very critical of the HD proposal and the PHC's designation process. (If readers didn't know this, I guess I'll have to get even _more_ vocal, won't I?) And in the past, I may have posted or written comments on this 'conflict of interest" point-- I haven't checked my old messages, but I'll make a general _mea culpa_ on this point in case I have. But as I said, I think Mr. Tyler was sincere about his reasons. I hope I haven't done him a disservice by passing along this portion of our conversation.
