The Crossroads Music Series presents KEN ANDERSON A tribute to Paul Robeson
TINDLEY TEMPLE CHOIR >From the church where gospel music began Saturday, February 8 at 7:30 PM Calvary United Methodist Church 48 th Street and Baltimore Avenue Admission $5-10-15 sliding scale PAUL ROBESON, an actor, athlete, attorney and singer, made his mark as an activist from the 1920s through the 1960s with perfor-mances and speeches in support of civil rights, workers' rights and world peace that got him into serious trouble during the McCarthy era. Robeson lived at 50th and Walnut Streets for many years. KEN ANDERSON, a Wilmington-based basso profundo has lectured extensively on Robeson and performed his music for decades. His knock-your-socks-off voice truly does justice to this material. Rev. CHARLES A. TINDLEY, the founder of South Philadelphia's Tindley Temple, is one of the most important composers in the history of African-American sacred music. Tindley wrote scores of favorite hymns, including "Beams of Heaven," "We'll Understand It Better By and By," "The Storm is Passing Over," and "I Will Overcome" which later became the Civil Rights anthem "We Shall Overcome." His work inspired Thomas Dorsey, the "father of gospel," to start composing religious music. The CROSSROADS MUSIC SERIES - a consortium made up of the Cherry Tree Music Co-op and the Calvary Center for Culture and Community - presents artists representing two different Philadelphia musical communities on the second Saturday of each month, September-May. Supper and refreshments are available from the Calvary Cafe. The series is in part supported by a grant from the Bread and Roses Community Fund.
