        -- BRIEF BIOS OF PSR's 2003 HONOREES --

James Gilligan, M.D., noted author and activist in the field of violence
prevention, has been on the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the
Harvard Medical School since 1966. His groundbreaking work, Violence:
Reflections on A National Epidemic, explores the role of shame in the
etiology of murder and explains how our present penal system only
exacerbates it. He has also authored Preventing Violence: Prospects for
Tomorrow. For 25 years, he directed mental health services for the
Massachusetts prison system. Most recently, he has created a model program
in the California state prison system, based on the model of restorative
justice, which has shown remarkably low rates of recidivisim.

He is Past President of the International Association for Forensic
Psychotherapy. James Gilligan was appointed by President Clinton to serve
on the Academic Advisory Board of the National Campaign against Youth
Violence. He is also a member of the International Criminal Tribunal for
the former Yugoslavia in the Hague, and consults internationally.

Carol Gilligan is University Professor at New York University, with a
joint appointment in the Graduate School of Education and the NYU
School of Law. She came to NYU from a 35-year career at Harvard. Probably
no academic of our generation has so captured the public imagination with
her work on gender and the idea that men tend to think of morality in
terms of rules and justice, while women tend to think in terms of caring
and relationship. By attending with care and respect to the voices of
women and girls, she has transformed our understanding of human
psychology. Her books include In A Different Voice: Psychological Theory
and Women's Development; Women, Girls and Psychotherapy: Reframing
Resistance; Between Voice and Silence: Women and Girls, Race and
Relationship; and, most recently, The Birth of Pleasure.

Professor Gilligan has a passion for social justice and a rich conception
of what it means to be an ethical and responsible professional. Named one
of Time Magazine's twenty-five most influential people in 1996, she has
also received the Heinz Award for knowledge of the Human Condition.
Harvard University's new Center on Gender and Education will have a Carol
Gilligan chair, which has been endowed with a $2.5 million gift from
actress Jane Fonda.
