I am very concerned about the proposed homeless
shelter. If the proposal was for a smaller
facility, a place for families, and a place that
provided job training or mental health services
in addition to a bed, I would likely support it.
But it sounds like this facility would be a large
(and expanding) one which could have a huge
negative impact on the area. This neighborhood
is already struggling with a terrible litter
problem, intermittent violent crime and drugs.
Just because we are an overwhelmingly liberal,
open-minded group is no reason for us to accept a
facility which could potentially have a huge
impact on our property values, neighborhood
businesses, and safety. There are better ways to
serve the homeless than to pack 200+ of them into
beds at night with nothing to do during the day.

The city needs to be aware that we have concerns
about the proposed use of the building. I plan
to write Councilwoman Blackwell about my
concerns, and I hope others do the same.
