Apparently because of damaged (rotted) planking underneath. Given the
house's history (pre-CA), I'd wager it was lack of maintenance for
many years. See the second photo.

That was one of the few good repairs I saw Eugene Block do. (Who
knows, he may have done lots of good repairs that I couldn't see. I I
just saw a lot of bad ones, and his maintenance guys would excuse
themselves, saying it wasn't the kind of work they wanted to be known
for, just the budget they were given.) Joe Palmer did that repair, he
seemed good. I hired him myself once.

Some sort of rubberized roofing material. The guys said it was
looks-like-slate roll-on shingle (my paraphrase).

They're kind of dropping it, not carefully lowering it. I'm sure it
would cost far more to lower it carefully, and the removal process
(see photo 4) often involves a crowbar used as a hammer.

I'll probably add a few photos as the work progresses, but I may not
bother to announce it. The 4410 page will stay up for a few weeks,
then quietly disappear.
