Clark Park Parents and Others,

Over the weekend, Bob Dages, Lew Mellman, and I found a man vandalizing
the trees in Clark Park. We later found three liquor bottles broken in
the Tot Lot in the north section of Clark Park. Although we cleaned up
the glass as well as we could, there is still some glass left embedded
in the play surface and on the top of the stone wall. Please be careful
if your children are playing there that they stay away from the
remaining glass.

If you notice anyone breaking bottles, vandalizing the trees, or
breaking anything else in the park, please call 911 and give them a
description of the person, the time they vandalized the park, and what
they did. Also, please let Jacqueline Slaughter, ([EMAIL PROTECTED]),
chair of the Friends of Clark Park Safety Committee, know about the
incident so that we know how many of these events are occurring at Clark
Park. Unfortunately the police don't track these type (they call them
quality of life, not criminal) calls about Clark Park and so we aren't
able to quantify the number of these incidents in the park. According to
911 records the biggest problem around Clark Park are car break-ins,
which, while a serious problem, are probably not relevant to the broken
glass and vandalization issues in Clark Park.

Over the last year, I've called the police numerous times about people
drunk and breaking bottles in the park, urinating/defecating in the
park, ripping down branches and tearing down trees, as well as dumping
trash in the park. If you care about the park and you want to keep it
clean and safe then you have to let the police and the City Council and
Mayor know that this is important to us (and therefore to them). One
person, like me, calling in a lot, just gives the Police and the
politicians the impression that it's not a common problem or that it's
not important to the community. I don't think that's the case, but
unless and until we can document both the level of the problem and the
concern of the community, we're going to continue to have these
problems.

I've listed the numbers for the various elected representatives below if
you wish to let them know that this is important to you. Also, please
let Ms. Slaughter know if you call or write to one of our elected
representatives so that we can document that we've let them know of the
problem.

Thanks,

Andy
