For cheap authentic Indian food for lunch in center city, I recommend Minar's Palace on Sansom Street. I think it's on the 1700 block. It's the little restaurant next to the empty space where the buildings were knocked down. I understand that Minar's Palace was supposed to be knocked down too, but the owners refused to give up their lease. My Indian work buddies think the food is very authentic, just the kind of food they would get at a street stall in Bombay. It's very casual. You order at the counter and take your food on a cafeteria tray to your seat. The place looks small from the outside, but there is extra seating in the basement. The portions are huge. I haven't been able to finish a meal yet, so I usually order it to go and save the rest for lunch the next day.
