When I lived in Feltonville, it was a normal occurrence for my neighbors to steal air conditioners out of people's windows instead of buying them. Always secure the window and try to install screws through the base of the air conditioning unit into the windowsill. Use long screws.
I like the idea of epoxying razor blades to the unit. Maybe I've been reading too much Sax Rohmer.
Also, if this guy seems to turn up at the same time, as Al said, it might not be too difficult to set up a camcorder to catch him in the act. Many camcorders come with an infrared setting, and leaving one running on a timer might be worth trying.
(I'd been considering installing an air conditioner in one of my first-floor-rear windows, This was something to consider.)
