Soon after we arrived, I was scything the backyard of a recently arrived Cambodian family and came down with a dreadful case of poison ivy all over my arms. I went to Dr. Anna Held, and while she was treating them I commented, "You know, this is more like a little village than a big city." "Yes," she replied, "in many ways it is like a little village."
This is actually a fairly well known and documented "fact." ... Philadelphia has always been known as the biggest small town in the world. The City-County Consolidation Act of 1852 gave rise to the moniker - "City of Neighborhoods." Prior to that, all of the "neighborhoods" WERE independent municipalities within the County of Philadelphia.
Consequently, Philadelphia is far more Suburban than Urban. It does have less in common with Manhattan than with Emmaus. This despite the fact that in 1776 it was the second largest English speaking city in the World -- London being the largest.
When the Aloca sponsored Society Hill Towers opened some 35 years ago, Robert Goulet's Manhattan Tower was a fitting anthem. But it was a very un-Philadelphia attitude and caused much consternation in the community.
