There appears to be some confusion over the role community organizations
have in whether or not Hack is permitted to film in the area. There seems to
be the suggestion that the Hack production company some how "bought" the
right to film in UC from SHCA for the often repeated "$500 and a tree."
Further, based on my interpretation of the listserv traffic on this issue,
it seems that people are taking their frustrations with the Hack shooting in
the neighborhood out on SHCA. I stand ready to be corrected, but I do not
believe that SHCA is that powerful or influential -- the right to film
originates from the City. I would assume that that the production company
attempts to reach out to community organizations as a show of good faith,
and a desire to be inclusive, not to obtain "permission."

I agree it would be helpful to hear from a representative from SHCA with
regard to: (1) the organization's alleged contact with the Hack production
company; (2) whether a donation was made to the organization by the
production company and if so, under what circumstances; and (3) when and
where the tree is being planted.

Jonathan's message addresses the point I've been raising fairly accurately. From what we've learned on this list, the producers of _Hack_ have made a good-faith effort to deal with our community. It appears that the problems have arisen from the local failure to communicate anything to the rest of the community. A television production requires considerable logistics; why couldn't the people who met with the producers have notified the rest of us about what was going to happen, what our rights were, what restrictions we might be facing, where cars might be towed, or what benefits we might enjoy? Didn't happen. Hasn't happened yet. Maybe it'll happen Tuesday.

We could sum this up with a single question: "Who got the tree?"
