Friends of Clark Park held its annual election for officers at the quarterly Membership Meeting last night. The meeting took place in Griffith Hall on the USP campus. About 50 people attended.

In a close election Tony West was chosen over Glenn Moyer to succeed outgoing President Andy Cole. Ronald Hudson was elected as Vice President; he had been opposed by Chris Leswing. Jonathan Snyder, who had been appointed Secretary during the previous term owing to a vacancy, was elected by acclamation. Treasurer Bill Moriarty was reelected by acclamation.

Three new Directors were elected to the Board for terms that will expire in 2005: Molly Roth, Brian Siano and Chris White. Fran Byers and Lew Mellman were reelected to two-year terms. They join seven Board members whose terms will expire next year: Ann Dixon, Dubside, Anuj Gupta, Mauricio Mendez-Vaz, Todd Sandler, Jackie Slaughter, and Darryl Stovall.

In other new business, the members voted to start a committee to explore the Dept. of Recreation system of regulating events in the park which involve amplified sound. Two individuals were chosen who represent opposing tastes in the matter, and they agreed to search for a common position after study. West will chair that committee.

Some members expressed impatience at the City's slow pace in replacing the older children's playground. It had run into an unexpected cost overrun, Cole explained, and Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell had needed to scuffle around to find the cash. But find it she did; she has told Cole that the work will be completed sometime this fall.

Friends of Clark Park has probably never been bigger than it was at this Fall Membership Meeting. Paid membership has increased by 55% since last year and the total membership rolls now top 320. There aren't many parks in Philadelphia that have more Friends per acre than Clark Park! We are grateful to all of you.
