Yes, illegal speakeasies should be shut down but most of the neighborhood > bars on Baltimore Ave. have existed there quite nicely for years -- only the > clientele has changed with the neighborhood. You would think differently if your elderly parent or newborn had to breathe the toxic fumes every day, or if you were forced to pay for AC during the summer because you could not open your windows. Or if your mother or child was run down on the sidewalk by the crazy drivers who frequent the gas station on 46th. Or if your pregant wife and child were taunted about wanting to walk on the sidewalk and not in the street. The licensed bars are not the issue. Our safety is being put at risk because people are making loads of money and contributing none of it back to the neighborhood. There *are* other, more community-friendly auto repair shops in UCity. Also, I'd bet that most of the cars being repaired at 46th and baltimore are insurance jobs being towed here from other parts of the city. Many of them appear over the weekends when their respectable clients are out drunk smashing up vehicles. If people want to talk about gentrification they should look at the fact that their rights are being compromised by a well-connected, big-money auto body shop who can afford to pay fines as a cost of doing business. And that this money has the power to influence several city departments in their favor. The parking authority has been recommended to go easy on ticketing cars on their lots. Does the parking authority go easy on ticketing you? --Michael. -- . Michael Jastremski .......................................................... ..
