City's Lawyer Moved Quickly to Preserve Subpoenaed Records (10/22/03) by KYW's Mike Dunn One day after the FBI raided city offices last week, the Street administration's top lawyer issued an internal memo warning all staffers not to destroy any records. The memo from city solicitor Nelson Diaz (left) provides an insight into the Street administration's reaction to last week's very visible raids by federal agents on the Finance Department and the Pension board. A day after the raids, Diaz wrote to commissioners and department heads, "As you are aware, the city has been served with a grand jury subpoena by the United States attorney's office." Diaz says all records from January 1st of this year until present must be preserved. The solicitor says this includes everything from e-mails to contracts, from appointment books to telephone records, from data on handheld computers to records of meetings. Diaz writes that no record in either hard copy or electronic form should be altered or destroyed without consulting his Legal Department first.
