On Christmas day, the Inquirer published a wonderful article about "HOSTS
for HOSPITALS".
While highlighting the extremes of courage and benevolence, it left me
seeking a way to encourage lesser lights (like myself) to contribute.

University City is key to the success of the HfH program.
We are convenient to the best doctors and hospitals.
HfH recognizes this and is trying to have an office up and running in our
community by mid-February.
Meanwhile, they make do with telephone contacts and a strong E-network.
There are many simple ways to help.

Once the office, planned for 39th and Chestnut, is open, volunteers can
help keep it staffed and clean.
Donations can be made through the United Way(#14156), whimsical Pins
(houses and city scapes) are available and there will be an upcoming
Auction of donated Time Shares and Vacation Homes. Its goal is to raise
$20,000.
Volunteers are needed to plan the event; tickets to the Party and Auction
will be available; and hopefully folks will vie for the "Homes away from
Home" Time Shares and Vacation Spots with upwardly spiraling generosity.
Most housing placements are simple donations of space that is not in
current use.
Guests are often healthy family members of patients.
They spend most of their time at the hospital, with the patient, and are
easy to help and please.
Often Hotels are beyond their means and housing is perceived as a gift of
comfort, peace and community.
We have offered guests both rooms in our home and in our furnished
apartment. One example: I knew we'd have a furnished apartment vacant
from mid December until January 1. Two "healthy" fellow coming in from
abroad for an important study needed 4 days of housing during the period
of vacancy. We left a lock box on the door and they used the apartment
gently. It cost us nothing (no one else wanted to rent those days) and
did a world of good. Even Tenants can sometimes loan out a spare room
for a few nights. Other Landlords may have the occasional planned
vacancy. Illness and accidents occur year-round, and some of us can
donate parts of our summer housing slump to a worthy cause.
I was asked to supply the names and E-mail addresses of 10 folks who
might help HfH.
I try hard to respect other peoples privacy and money, so I instead of
submitting names, I am forwarding this request to the list, in the hope
that at least 10 people will step forward and volunteer their time or
spare rooms to HfH.

I work on commissions only. I know that a devastating illness could
shatter our family's finances. I believe many of us are in similar
financial boats. Whether we call it karma, or emotional insurance or
charity, helping others does have a ripple effect. While many good deeds
are "punished" the some of good will does seem to get paid forward.
