I have an update on the status of the portal point garden and the trees on the islands at 39th and Baltimore.
I have spoken with Amanda Benner from UC Green and she is arranging for me to meet with Landscape Architects from Penn Facilities to see what can be done, if anything to save, move, replace in-kind, or recreate the gardens and the trees. Sadly, but more than likely, none of the planted areas will be able to be saved as is, including all the trees. Some of the plant material from the Getty Island (Penn's parking lot) is currently being relocated to the Sadie Alexander School and other Penn campus sites. Glenn Bryan from the University called and we discussed the process that had been followed for community notification. Jannie Blackwell's office knew about the project, so did leaders and representatives from community groups that attend the University's First Thursday information sessions - that would include SHCA and the splinter groups. The people who looked at the plans either did not realize the ramifications of them and/or didn't think to spread the word about them to us. The organizers of the project (Penn, Vet School, Streets Department) also never contacted us directly. So, unfortunately the gardening community and Woodland Terrace Homeowners Association were never notified. I will attend the next First Thursday session on the 5th of Feb. and this will be on the agenda. Lauren W.
