More than 85 residents of 3901 Market Street participated in this forum to generate principles to help guide the continuing evolution of 40th Street. Having a meeting right at 3901 Market is the first thing about the whole 40th Street effort that makes sense. And it makes a lot of it!
The "concerns" and "uses" were telling; the "principles" were nonsense, except for the one about longer lights (so pedestrians had more time to cross), but this was a concern and not a principle.
Getting real! What a nice surprise. Actually, a surprise squared. 1) I'm surprised the organizers did it. 2) The organizers were undoubtedly surprised that none of the true stakeholders was interested in making an upscale destination shopping enclave for people from Bucks County to come and make believe they were enjoying the urbane urban scene.
More of this and less of the self-serving pap that came from the Penn people at the Rotunda meeting, and we'll make some progress in improving the quality of life for everyone. Maybe without even displacing the folks who can't afford to buy those little cakes at the new upscale bakery when the food market runs out of Wonder Bread.
