The Crucifixion, written in 1887 for performance at
London's St.Marylebone Church, has been performed
there each year since its premiere. Constructed along
the lines of Johann Sebastian Bach's Passions, the
work includes arias, recitatives, choruses (including
the beloved "God So Loved the World"), and hymns,
which the audience is encouraged to sing. Originally
scored for four voices, with tenor and bass soloists
and organ accompaniment, the orchestration by Barry
Rose was
commissioned for the Guildford Philharmonic, and
premiered at Guildford Cathedral on March 31, 2001,
the 100th anniversary of Stainer's death.
>
American audiences have seen Barry Rose, O.B.E.,
conducting the choir at Charles and Diana's wedding,
and at Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee service.
>
masterpiece in this
> delightful new version.
